Psychological Therapy for Adults, Professionals, and Thoughtful People

Meet Richard W. Anton, Registered Psychologist in Calgary

At Anton Psychology & Associates, therapy begins with understanding. We work with adults who want more than symptom relief—people seeking greater clarity about themselves, their relationships, their work, or the direction their lives are taking. Our approach combines psychological knowledge with thoughtful attention to the person behind the problem. This helps you understand patterns, develop perspective, and make meaningful changes.

When you sit down with me, my first priority is to create a space where you can feel safe enough to be honest about what is happening in your life.

A Collaborative Approach to Therapy

Reaching out for psychological support is not always easy. Furthermore, it can take courage to acknowledge that something is no longer working, that you are carrying more than you want to carry, or simply that you want to understand yourself more deeply.

I do not see therapy as a process of judging, fixing, or telling you who you should be.

Instead, I see it as a collaborative process of understanding.

Together, we can slow things down, make sense of what you are experiencing, recognize patterns that may be difficult to see on your own, and explore what matters most to you. My role is to bring psychological knowledge, curiosity, compassion, and perspective. Also, I respect your experience and your capacity to determine what is right for you.

Clients often tell me that they value my ability to stay present and listen carefully. They appreciate that I notice things they may not have recognized themselves, while leaving room for complexity and uncertainty.

Sometimes the most useful thing therapy can offer is the opportunity to stop reacting long enough to understand what is actually happening.

A Psychological Approach Grounded in Presence and Perspective

I became a psychologist because I have long been interested in what lies beneath the surface of people’s lives.

People often carry experiences they have never fully understood, questions they have not known how to articulate, or patterns that continue to influence them long after the circumstances that created them have changed.

At the same time, people carry strengths, possibilities, values, and capacities that may not yet be fully recognized.

Therapy can provide a place to explore both.

I believe meaningful psychological work requires more than techniques or advice. In addition, it requires a relationship in which you can think openly, examine difficult experiences, and consider perspectives that may not be available when you are simply trying to get through the day.

I try to bring a grounded and compassionate presence to that process, along with genuine curiosity about the person sitting across from me.

What I Bring to Therapy

My approach draws on more than two decades of experience as a Registered Psychologist in Alberta.

Over the course of my career, I have worked with individuals, couples, professionals, students, parents, leaders, and others navigating a wide range of personal and professional challenges. I have a particular interest in working with thoughtful adults. These are people who may be functioning well on the outside while privately experiencing anxiety, stress, burnout, uncertainty, or a sense that something is no longer quite right.

My work has included concerns related to:

  • anxiety and chronic stress
  • relationships and interpersonal difficulties
  • self-esteem and self-worth
  • professional and workplace stress
  • burnout and overextension
  • life transitions and changing circumstances
  • identity, direction, and purpose
  • personal growth and psychological development
  • leadership and the demands of responsibility

I do not assume that every difficulty requires the same response. Some concerns benefit from practical strategies and skill development. Others require more time to understand the patterns, relationships, experiences, and assumptions beneath the problem.

Often, meaningful therapy involves both.

What Therapy With Me May Feel Like

The emotional atmosphere

Every therapeutic relationship is different, but I aim to create an atmosphere that is:

Warm and respectful
You should be able to speak openly without feeling judged or rushed.

Thoughtful and curious
Rather than accepting familiar explanations automatically, we can become curious about what may be happening beneath the surface.

Honest without being harsh
Therapy sometimes involves looking at things we would rather avoid. I believe this can be done with compassion and respect.

The way we work together

Grounded in psychological understanding
Our conversations are informed by psychological knowledge while remaining focused on your particular experience rather than forcing you into a predetermined model.

Collaborative
I am not there to take over your decisions. My role is to help you see more clearly, consider possibilities, and make choices that are increasingly consistent with what matters to you.

Therapy Is Not Only About Problems

Many people seek therapy because something is painful or difficult. But therapy can also be valuable when there is no obvious crisis.

You may be functioning well while feeling dissatisfied, uncertain, disconnected, or increasingly aware that something needs to change.

You may be asking:

Why do I keep responding this way?

What do I actually want?

Why does a life that looks successful on paper not feel quite right?

How do I want to handle this next chapter?

What matters enough to guide my choices?

Who am I becoming through the way I am living?

These questions can be just as important as symptom relief.

I believe psychological growth often involves becoming more aware of ourselves, understanding the patterns that have shaped us, discerning what matters, and gradually learning to live with greater intention.

For some people, therapy is about feeling better.

For others, it is about understanding themselves.

Often, it is both.

Personal Growth, Meaning, and Becoming

One of the themes that has increasingly informed my work is the idea that our lives are shaped through repeated patterns of attention, interpretation, choice, and action.

We become who we are partly through what we repeatedly notice, how we respond to experience, and the choices we make over time.

This does not mean that we are completely defined by our past or by our existing patterns. It means that greater awareness can create greater choice.

Therapy can help you pause long enough to ask:

What is happening beneath the surface?

How would I like to respond?

What matters most here?

Who am I becoming through the choices I make?

What does it mean?

For me, this is one of the deeper possibilities of psychological work. Therapy is not simply about returning you to the way you were before something went wrong. Sometimes it is about helping you understand where you are now and deciding more consciously where you want to go.

My Experience as a Psychologist and Supervisor

I have been a Registered Psychologist in Alberta for more than 20 years.

Alongside my clinical practice, I have supervised emerging psychologists and supported them as they develop their professional identity, clinical judgment, and capacity to work thoughtfully with clients.

Supervision has strengthened my own appreciation for the complexity of psychological work. Good therapy requires knowledge and skill. However, it also requires presence, humility, curiosity, judgment, and an ability to remain open to what is actually happening in the room.

I have also contributed to the broader field of health psychology and remain deeply interested in psychological research, professional development, and the ongoing evolution of our understanding of human experience.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Writing and reflection are important parts of my life outside clinical practice.

I am interested in the intersection of psychology, presence, imagination, character, and the gradual process of becoming.

I spend time in nature, write about psychological growth and human experience, and continue to explore questions that extend beyond the immediate concerns that bring people into therapy.

These interests are connected to the way I approach psychological work: with a belief that people are more than their symptoms, problems, diagnoses, or current circumstances.

There is usually more to understand.

And there is often more possibility than we can see when we are overwhelmed by the present.
